Nowaadays, the Herman Miller Aeron Chair is one of the top rated chairs at technology companies ond offices everywhere. It offers users exceptionally high levels of comfort, and provides support in an ergonomically balanced manner.
This chair was designed by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf. These two designers, who previously collaborated to design the 'Equa' chair, understand that the human body was not designed to remain seated and static for extended periods of time. In this day and age, however, many jobs and workplaces require us to sit at our desks for extended periods of time, in positions not natural to us.
The Aeron Chair was designed to minimize the unnatural strain and stress that extended sitting places on the human body.
The Aeron chair was designed with four end goals in mind:
- Ergonomics: The Aeron chair was designed to work to better the health and wellness of the occupant. It was made to reduce the stress and strain of unnatural sitting
- Function: The Aeron chair was created to support the occupant, and allow him to sit in whatever position best suits his work.
- Anthropometrics: The Aeron chair should not be formed to be comfortable and efficient for very few people, but rather for a large amount of people. The Aeron chair was created to comfortably fit every person who wished to sit in it.
- Environment: The Aeron chair should be created out of natural substances, in an environmentally manner. It was intended to be broken down easily during dissembly, and recyclable, for easy disposal.
Perhaps one of the most unique features of the Aeron chair is the 'Pellicle' covering. 'Pellicle' is a synthetic mesh-like material developed by Herman Miller over the course of several years to meet some very specific requirements.
The Pellicle mesh is slightly forgiving; it will warp itself to match the differences in every person, yielding a comfortable surface perfectly matched to your body, while still providing the continuous support level you need.
The mesh also was created to provide high airflow, to aid with the cooling of the body. It allows moisture and heat to dissipate from your body, rather than accumulating between you and your chair.
During the design stages of the Aeron Chair, a variety of experts were asked for their input.
- Leading ergonomists, orthopedic specialists, and physical therapists inspected the Aeron Chair for fit and support, determining how best to support the human body
- The designers travelled across the country measuring the physical dimensions of hundreds of people, in order to determine the typical height, weight, and even such factors such as forearm length, or leg length.
- The Pellicle designers worked to optimize the heat and moisture dissipation properties of Pellicle over a wide range of pressures and weights, resulting in the ideal levels for the consumer.
Aesthetically, the Aeron Chair is quite visually appealing. While lacking the comforting padded image of many contemporary ergonomic chairs, the Aeron Chair has a spartan grace about it. Coming in a variety of colours, and a range of shapes, the Aeron Chair is sure to come in a size and color to match both you, and your office.
